About FlooringCalculator.co.uk
Updated February 2026Our Mission
FlooringCalculator.co.uk provides free, accurate online calculators for every type of flooring commonly installed in UK homes. Our tools help homeowners, DIY fitters, and professional flooring contractors work out exactly how much material to buy — down to the number of packs or metres of carpet — along with realistic cost estimates based on current UK market prices.
Flooring is one of the most significant investments in any home, and getting the quantity right matters in two directions. Buy too much, and you have spent money on packs of laminate or rolls of vinyl that sit unused. Buy too little, and you face the frustrating problem of needing to source additional stock that may no longer match your original batch. Our calculators eliminate both risks by giving you precise, pack-level results the moment you enter your room dimensions.
What Calculators We Provide
FlooringCalculator.co.uk offers free calculators for the full range of flooring types available in the UK market:
Laminate Flooring Calculator
Our laminate calculator works out the exact number of packs needed for any room. Enter your room length, width, plank length, plank width, and planks per pack, and the calculator returns total area, area including wastage, pack coverage, packs needed, total planks, spare planks, and estimated cost. Covers all common UK laminate plank sizes including 1,285 × 192mm, 1,380 × 193mm, and 1,200 × 190mm formats. Wastage defaults to 10% for standard lay, which you can adjust for angled patterns or irregular rooms.
Vinyl and LVT Flooring Calculator
Our vinyl and LVT calculator handles both sheet vinyl (sold by linear metre from a standard 4m wide roll) and luxury vinyl tiles (LVT, sold in packs). For LVT, the calculator works identically to the laminate tool. For sheet vinyl, it calculates how many linear metres of the roll you need, accounting for the room width and a minimum 100mm join or cutting allowance. Covers all common UK LVT formats from standard 304 × 609mm tiles to large-format 450 × 914mm planks.
Carpet Calculator
Our carpet calculator estimates how many square metres of carpet you need for a room or a whole house, including an appropriate wastage allowance for seaming and directional pile matching. Results are shown in square metres (the standard unit used by all UK carpet retailers), total rolls (based on standard 4m and 5m roll widths), and estimated cost at your chosen price per square metre.
Hardwood and Engineered Wood Calculator
Our hardwood and engineered wood calculator covers solid hardwood boards (typically sold by the square metre) and engineered wood (sold in packs). Wastage defaults are higher than for laminate — typically 12–15% — because hardwood often involves more precise alignment around architectural features. The calculator shows total area, wastage area, packs or square metres needed, and cost estimate.
Underlay Calculator
Our underlay calculator works out how many square metres of underlay you need for any flooring project. Underlay is sold in rolls of fixed width and length, so the calculator converts your floor area into whole rolls based on the roll dimensions you specify. Covers foam underlay (standard 3mm and 5mm), fibreboard underlay, and rubber crumb underlay options.
Flooring Cost Estimator
Our cost estimator combines material and labour costs into a single project budget. Enter your floor area, flooring type, quality tier, and postcode area, and the estimator returns a total project cost range covering materials, underlay, adhesive, and professional fitting. Labour rates are sourced from Checkatrade and MyBuilder data, with regional adjustments for London, the South East, and other UK regions.
Who Our Calculators Are For
Our tools are used across the full spectrum of people involved in flooring projects:
- Homeowners planning a room renovation — The most common use case. Before visiting Carpetright, Tapi, B&Q, or an independent tile shop, knowing exactly how many packs or metres you need prevents both the embarrassment of underestimating and the waste of overbuying.
- DIY fitters — If you are fitting your own flooring, accurate pack quantities are essential. Our calculators handle the pack-level rounding that manufacturers’ basic area calculators often miss, ensuring you account for whole packs rather than fractions.
- Professional flooring contractors — A quick independent check against your own site measurements, or a client-facing tool to show the basis for the quantities in your quote.
- Property developers and buy-to-let landlords — Estimating flooring costs across multiple properties or refurbishment projects, where accurate material quantities feed into project budget models and ROI calculations.
- Interior designers and architects — Providing clients with realistic material quantities to accompany flooring specifications and material schedules.
Our Data Sources and Pricing
Pricing estimates on FlooringCalculator.co.uk are based on UK retail prices monitored from major retailers including B&Q, Wickes, Carpetright, Tapi Carpets, Flooring Superstore, and United Carpets. We also reference manufacturer direct prices from Quick-Step, Egger, Amtico, and Karndean for LVT. Prices are reviewed and updated at least quarterly, and each page shows the date it was last reviewed.
Product specifications (plank sizes, pack coverage figures, roll widths) are sourced from manufacturer technical documentation and verified against current retailer listings. Fitting cost estimates are based on data from Checkatrade, MyBuilder, and the National Institute of Carpet and Floorlayers (NICF), with regional multipliers applied for London, the South East, and other UK regions.
Accuracy and Limitations
Our calculators provide estimates designed for planning and budgeting. They assume rectangular rooms with straight-lay flooring and standard product sizes. For rooms with alcoves, bay windows, irregular shapes, or fitted furniture, we recommend splitting the area into rectangular sections and calculating each section separately, then adding the results. Prices are indicative and change over time — always check current retailer prices before purchasing. Labour costs are national averages and may differ significantly in your area.
